Sir Lewis Hamilton's Career

Sir Lewis Hamilton is known to some as just a formula one driver but to others, he is known as the best f1 driver in history. With 99 wins Hamilton surpasses Michael Schumacher who sits at a comfortable 91 wins after he retires in 2012.

Hamilton’s dominance has been so profound over the last seven years that not only does he have the most wins (taking 77 of those during his time at Mercedes), but he has almost double the wins of Sebastian Vettel in third place. His first win came in 2007 at the Canadian Grand Prix, just six races into his rookie season, while his most recent win was the 2021 British Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton was born on 7th January 1985 in Stevenage, England. At the young age of eight, he sat in a kart for the very first time and immediately fell in love with racing. Mercedes-Benz saw the adolescent’s tremendous talent; they became one of his sponsors from the word go.

He soon climbed the career ladder at an exceptional rate. Once he had topped the competition in every category of karting and was awarded the McLaren Mercedes Champions of the future series, McLaren Mercedes enrolled him into their Young Driver Programme in 1997. When he turned 16, he moved up into British Formula Renault and achieving the championship two years later.

Lewis’s winning streak continued undefeated in the f3 Euro Series. He was given the title of junior champion whilst still in his second year, this led to him racing in the GP2 Series with ART Grand Prix. Although he had a newbie status, Hamilton smashed the championship- taking five wins on his path to the title. This accomplishment immediately led to his promotion to the very peak of motor racing; formula one.

Sir Lewis Hamilton made his first debut with McLaren Mercedes on the 18th March 2007 in Grand Prix racing, whilst he was only twenty-two years old. Despite his age, he remained in competition for the title going up against the best of the best who had considerably more experience. Lewis set numerous new records in his rookie season including most race wins, most pole positions and most points scored in a debut season.

Although he already had been having an outstanding career, he reached an all-new high in 2008 when he was crowned for the first time in his life Formula One World Championship crown. He was the youngest ever to be awarded the title at just 23 years, 9 months, and 26 days. Lewis secured the championship on the last lap of the final race in Brazil after a late overtake for 5th place.

After 6 winning seasons with McLaren Mercedes, Hamilton looked for a new change of scenery and decided to join the ranks for the Mercedes team for the 2013 season. Lewis won his first podium in a Mercedes car in only his second race with the company at the Malaysian track. He finished 4th overall in the drivers’ standings.

Hamilton picked up his 6th F1 title in 2019, securing the win at the United States Grand Prix with only a couple of rounds to spare. He equaled the most podiums: 17 and the most wins: 11 he has ever scored in a single season, while also scoring the most points: 413. The finale which was set in Abu Dhabi was his 250th race start.

Lewis’s career reached a new level in 2020 when he broke several different records in a tough season that featured a variety of date changes due to the pandemic. During the course of the year broke Michael Schumacher’s record of F1 race wins and at the Turkish Grand Prix, he matched Michael’s record of world titles with his seventh Drivers’ Championship.
